![]() ![]() Taking the form of a monologue from a Syrian father, Sea Prayer is a hymn to more innocent times. ![]() “It is a short book, yes, but it is, I think, a story that is universal,” he tells me. By the time his publisher suggested that it should next be immortalised in book form, the writer was receptive to the idea. The speech was a success – Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner, is a persuasive orator – and then took on a life of its own when it was developed into a virtual reality film with musical accompaniment from the Kronos Quartet. But then it was originally written as a speech he delivered in 2017 at a charity fundraiser on the subject of refugees. At just 41 pages, and with minimal text, Sea Prayer takes five minutes to read, and so is by some distance not a novel. Khaled Hosseini’s latest project is something of an accidental book. ![]()
